What Causes Window Seal Failure?

FacebookTwitterEmailShare

Window seal failure, like vinyl siding failure, is a serious problem that can lead to costly damage in and around your home, not to mention soaring energy bills. In this post, V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, Inc. explains what causes window seal failure and what you can do about it.

What Causes Window Seal Failure

What Does the Window Seal Do?

Advances in technology have pushed the energy efficiency capacity of windows to new heights. Most windows today are built with double or triple panes, with a gas-fill for insulation located in between the panes. The window seal is responsible for locking the gas, usually argon, in place to create a barrier that prevents thermal transfer. This seal essentially keeps outside temperatures from affecting your interior spaces.

What Causes Seal Failure?

Like troublesome gutters, the failure of your window’s seal is due to many factors and understanding what these are is necessary in preventing future occurrences. If your brand new windows are experiencing seal failure, then it’s due to a mistake during the installation or manufacturing process. In the case of installation, there may have not been enough time for the sealant to properly cure.

Weather can also damage the seal. This typically occurs when your windows aren’t suitable for the local climate. Wood, for example, may be a great window material for colder climates, but it doesn’t fare well in more humid locations and it can rapidly deteriorate, causing seal failure.

Finally, prolonged build-up of condensation on the surface of the window attracts mold, which can contribute to the premature deterioration of the window seal. Make sure to wipe moisture clean from the window to prevent this from happening.

As your local window installer and siding contractor, V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, Inc. is ready to assist you on your next home improvement project. We’ll make sure your new window seals stay intact so you can enjoy the benefits of your new addition.
