The Homeowner’s Crash Course to Siding Terminology

Whether you’re considering new siding, looking to have yours repaired, or wanting to understand the language used by the professionals, familiarizing yourself with the various terminologies related to siding is imperative. This way, you can make informed decisions and communicate effectively with your chosen contractor. Read on to learn more about these siding terms.

Lap Siding

Lap siding is among the most commonly installed types of siding in the construction industry and is widely popular due to its traditional and timeless appearance. Technically, the term refers to the installation method for horizontal siding panels. Here, one panel overlaps the other, creating a horizontal seam.

Fascia

The fascia is very much like siding in that it plays a crucial role in the aesthetics of a home. It is a horizontal board located at the edge of the roofline, and is installed to conceal the exposed ends of the roof’s rafters. In addition to providing a finished look, it offers sturdy support for the gutters’ fasteners.

J-Channel

This piece of material is used to secure siding panels around your home’s openings — e.g. the windows and doors. When installed, it provides a neat and finished look while also allowing the siding panels to expand and contract under temperature fluctuations.

Plumb or Square

This term refers to the perpendicular measurement of an object that is exactly 90 degrees from a level, horizontal surface. A siding expert will make sure every siding panel is plumb to your home’s exterior wall; otherwise, it will look slanted or out of place when seen from the curb.

R-Value

This term is widely used in home improvement circles, referring to the thermal resistance of siding, windows and other building materials. A higher R-value is usually indicative of better insulation, which can contribute to better energy efficiency and long-term cost savings.
