6 Important Siding Terms to Familiarize Yourself With

You need to consider a lot of important things when planning to upgrade your home’s exterior. Do take note – these aren’t just limited to your choice of siding material or color. When getting new siding, find time to learn more about the project itself. This means understanding some of the key terms involved with this specific upgrade.

6 Important Siding Terms to Familiarize Yourself With

V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, one of the premier siding and window companies in town, lists six terms you must familiarize yourself with.

  1. Batten – This refers to a wood strip that secures joints in wooden siding. Today’s “board and batten” siding actually means the old wood siding with “boards” and “battens” to fill the gaps between the boards.
  1. Buttlock – It’s what you call the bottom edge of a new vinyl panel, which is typically secured into the previously installed one.
  1. Drip Cap – Looking like an L-shaped flashing, it goes over replacement windows and doors before new siding is installed to keep moisture from seeping in the joints.
  1. Course – It refers to one completed row of siding. It either runs horizontally from one side to the other of a wall or from top to bottom in a vertical direction.
  1. Face Nailing – This refers to the action of putting nails directly onto the “face”  or visible side of a siding panel. As this practice exposes the nails, it’s not often used by professionals.
  1. Fascia Board – It is the trim that covers the roof rafter edges. Fascia boards are usually installed between the roofing material and the soffit overhang. Fascia caps, on the other hand, refers to the material covering the sides of a fascia board.

Purchase and install new siding with confidence using these key terms. To start with your siding or window replacement, get in touch with the pros at V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding. You may schedule a free consultation by calling (203) 639-1634 or by completing our contact form.
