3 Tips to Safely Pressure-Wash Your Siding

Pressure-washing is a convenient way to remove stubborn dirt, grime and algae from your siding. However, it needs to be done properly to ensure you don’t cause damage.

3 Tips to Safely Pressure Wash Your Siding

In this article, V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, Inc., a trusted siding contractor in the area, shares three tips to ensure a proper and safe way of pressure-washing your siding.

1. Use Low-Pressure Spray

Most electric washers have a low-pressure spray. However, if you have a gasoline-powered machine, you’ll likely have to dial the pressure down to anywhere between 1,500 and 2,400 psi.

Vinyl siding can crack under the force of a pressure washer, so you have to be extra careful. To make cleaning more efficient, you can apply a soap solution before pressure-washing. This will make it easier to remove dirt.

2. Ensure You Have the Right Sprayer and Nozzle

The tips of a quick-connect pressure washer are typically color coded denoting the width of the spray pattern. When cleaning your siding, the white (40°) and green (25°) tips are recommended for use. If your pressure washer has a turbo tip, you can use this as well. Avoid the yellow (15°) and red (0°) tips because these can damage your siding.

3. Aim the Sprayer Downward

Make sure to point the tip of your pressure washer downward to prevent water from penetrating the underside of the horizontal planks. When water finds its way into the gaps in your siding, this can eventually cause mold and rot. If you have tile siding, you may notice water running between the tiles. Don’t worry about this because the pressure will run it off.
