Why Does Your Asphalt Roof Look Wavy or Rippled?

The appearance of your asphalt shingles is essential to your home’s curb appeal. However, various reasons can cause them to look wavy or rippled. Make sure to call your trusted roofer immediately as your roof may have one of these underlying issues.

Poor Installation Quality

Asphalt shingles can suffer from rippling if they weren’t installed properly. Proper alignment of the shingles is crucial to the roof’s performance and longevity. That’s why you should hire a qualified roofing contractor that knows the correct nailing, stapling or adhering method to use based on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Improper Sheathing Installation

The sheathing should be installed with a gap between the boards to give room for expansion and contraction. Without a gap between the boards, your shingles will look wavy over time. Shingle rippling can also result from your builder’s negligence – specifically if they left the sheathing exposed to the elements for a long time.

Expansion

A reliable roofing contractor will make sure the weather conditions are suitable for roof installation. If your roofer installed your new shingles when the temperature outside is close to freezing and they failed to leave a gap, this could create a wavy look from expansion. Unfortunately, you’ll have to replace the shingles to fix this problem. Otherwise, your roof will have a shorter lifespan.

Re-Roofing Issues

Moisture can get trapped under and within the old shingles. This will eventually damage the underside of your new shingles as they absorb more moisture over time. Your new shingles will curl or ripple as a result of this. That said, you should opt for full roof replacement instead of re-roofing to avoid the risk of rippling.
