Common Winter Siding Problems, and How to Address Them

The winter season can put the best exterior components to the test, and siding is no exception. In this blog, siding contractor V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, Inc. shares a look at the common problems that affect siding during winter.

Common Winter Siding Problems and How to Address Them

Common Siding Problems

Winters in connecticut can go well below freezing. Typical siding may exhibit one or more of the following:

  1. Cracks or Holes — Low temperatures can turn siding brittle, which can make it more susceptible to impact from windborne debris or tightly-packed snowballs. If you find cracks and holes before the winter season begins, make your exterior less susceptible to damage by having it repaired by your siding contractor.
  2. Loose Panels — It’s not uncommon for siding panels to come loose as they age. Loose siding panels expose the layers underneath, which can make your home susceptible to heat leaks and moisture intrusion. You need to make sure loose siding panels are repaired before winter begins. Fortunately, vinyl siding is designed with interlocking pieces, so repairs shouldn’t take long to finish.
  3. Water Stains and Damaged Insulation — When moisture infiltrates the walls, you will notice water stains, along with clumping insulation. Leaving it as it is can cause further damage once winter begins.

Why Do You Need to Have Siding Issues Fixed?

Your home needs complete protection against the winter cold. Leaks can result in damage to the exterior wall. It can also cause drafts and make your home uncomfortable during winter. But, above all, it can increase your home’s indoor heating requirements. Your furnace or heat pump will need to increase its output to compensate, consuming more energy in the process.

Addressing the aforementioned siding problems, along with other winterizing best practices such as applying window seals, can help minimize heat loss. More importantly, you should keep up with regular siding maintenance. Vinyl siding has low maintenance requirements, but it shouldn’t be mistaken for “no maintenance requirements”. You still need to make sure that your siding is well taken care of, especially during the winter season.
