Asphalt Shingle Granules: Why They are Important

Have you noticed that your asphalt shingle roof contains a layer of granulated asphalt? Those small asphalt particles may not seem like much at first glance, but roofing experts would tell you that they are actually one of the most important components of any asphalt shingle roof.

Asphalt Shingle Granules Why They are Important

V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, the top provider of roofing and vinyl siding in the region, discuss what these granules are and why they are important.

What Are Asphalt Shingle Granules?

As one of the most visible aspects of asphalt shingles, these are a coating of finely crushed minerals over the main asphalt material and their fiberglass mat. Ceramic filing processes these granules into a wide range of colors, making them appear vibrant and appealing to the eyes. Asphalt shingle granules often come with distinct features, such as impact damage resistance and algae prevention. Many of them even have reflective properties to keep the roof “cool” and energy-efficient.

What Do They Do Exactly?

The key responsibility of shingle granules is to keep the actual asphalt layer from being exposed to the elements. Together with the gutters, they help prevent rainwater from collecting on your roofing system. And because these particles are made of crushed stone, they also offer UV and fire resistance. While It’s normal for shingles to lose their granules over time, an excess amount of them inside gutters indicates that a prompt roof replacement is needed.

What Happens When Granules Erode?

Often, this indicates that the roof is nearing, or already past, its lifespan. Shingle granule loss may also be caused by an intense weather event. When this happens, your roofing system loses its protection and becomes more vulnerable to leaks and other types of weather damage.
