Asphalt Shingle Cracking vs. Splitting: What’s the Difference?

When describing asphalt shingle problems, the terms “cracking” and “splitting” are often used interchangeably. While both essentially mean damage, there’s a difference between the two. “Cracking” occurs on the shingle surface while “splitting” refers to the shingle breaking into two or more pieces. If either issue isn’t addressed, it can expose your roof to further damage.

Today, we discuss the difference between asphalt shingle cracking and splitting.

What Causes Asphalt Cracking and Splitting?

During the manufacturing process, the asphalt mix that is applied to the shingles contains volatiles. These components give your asphalt shingles waterproofing capabilities and flexibility. Over time, the material loses volatiles, causing it to crack. Cracks typically indicate signs of aging, but if you see cracks on a new roof system, the quality of the asphalt shingles is likely mediocre.

On the other hand, asphalt shingle splitting is caused by thermal stress. Due to the continuous exposure to heat, the shingles expand. At night, they contract as temperatures go down. Aside from expanding and contracting, the adhesive used to secure the shingles on your roofing system may also cause splitting. If the adhesion of the shingles onto the underlayment and decking is too strong, they may be less resistant to high winds, causing your shingle to tear or split.

How Can You Prevent Asphalt Shingle Cracks and Splits?

The best way to prevent your asphalt shingle from cracking and splitting is by investing in high-quality roof materials. Instead of buying shingles on your own, it’s best to work with an experienced professional roofer. They will make sure that your choice of roofing materials are durable and reliable. In addition to that, your roof should also be maintained regularly. At the first sign of cracking or splitting, get in touch with your roofer so they will be able to perform the necessary repairs.
