A Buyer’s Guide to the Different Types of Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles come in all shapes and sizes, which can be overwhelming even for the seasoned homeowner. In today’s post, local general contractor V. Nanfito Roofing & Siding, Inc. will help make your roofing selection easier with this quick guide to the different types of asphalt shingles.

A Buyers Guide to the Different Types of Asphalt Shingles

Organic Vs. Fiberglass

The terms “organic” and “fiberglass” will pop up every once in a while in conversation and literature about asphalt shingles. Both terms refer to the asphalt shingle backing material and the key difference between the two lies in the raw materials. Whereas fiberglass is made from a synthetic polymer, organic asphalt shingles are made from recycled paper and pulped fabric, hence the name.

The rest of the manufacturing process is the same: sheets of the material are soaked in hot asphalt, then granules are pressed onto one side. Organic asphalt shingles are more absorbent and generally have higher asphalt content that makes them more rigid and waterproof, but it also makes them more vulnerable to fire.

The Three Types of Asphalt Shingles

Roofing manufacturers offer three types of asphalt shingles, with varying levels of roof maintenance requirements, expected life spans, and other options.

Three-tab asphalt shingles, or “strip” shingles, are generally considered the most basic and affordable asphalt shingle type. Basic, but not necessarily entry-level: a standard three-tab shingle roof typically lasts 20 years with care and maintenance. They typically have a limited and neutral color range, which, for most homes, is more than sufficient.

Laminate shingles are also known as dimensional or architectural shingles. These shingles are made of two layers of shingles laminated together, with asymmetrical edges that create raised areas that mimic wood shakes. They’re twice as thick as strip shingles, which makes them more durable and less susceptible to impact damage. They also come in a wider range of color options, including custom “blends”.

Premium shingles are sometimes advertised as luxury or designer shingles. These are laminate shingles with high-end features like profiles that mimic slate, tile, or fish scale patterns. Color selection is even more varied. Premium shingles may also have longer life spans and extensive warranty coverage.
