Ways You Can Avoid Home Improvement Stress

Home improvement and remodeling projects aren’t a walk in the park. It takes a lot of time, planning, and preparation. There’s a high possibility that you may become stressed out by the entire project as early as the planning process. Thankfully, there are ways to avoid the anxiety.

Ways You Can Avoid Home Improvement Stress

In this post, V. Nanfito Roofing and Siding discusses six ways you can avoid stress during home improvement projects.

Schedule a Contractor on the Appropriate Season

Since homeowners choose summer to do a major home remodel, contractors become swamped and stressed for the season. If you want to be done on time and on budget, hiring them during these times isn’t a good idea. Schedule your contractor at a less hectic time so you can get things done on the expected date and within budget.

Bottom Line of Bids

When looking for bids, it’s tempting to accept the first decent bid. That’s why it’s important you get at least three or more bids and look at their bottom line. A higher estimate may come with certain perks that a lower one won’t give, such as cleanup, insurance, and working at night. Picking these over a bargain can save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

Let the Contractor Handle Permits

While it’s possible for you to obtain the permits yourself, to get some of the load off your shoulders, get your general contractor to handle the permits instead. It may cost you a little extra but it’s still something off your to-do list.

Set Deadlines

One way to keep a home remodeling project stress-free is by staying on schedule. The contractor should create benchmarks before the project begins. You can keep an eye on these benchmarks to ensure everything is going according to plan and on time. This is important because you have to intervene when at least two of these benchmarks are missed. One missed benchmark may allow the contractor to make up for lost time but two may derail the time table and project entirely.

Get Rid of What You Don’t Need

Before the home improvement project starts, try to get rid of the things you no longer need. The project may take up a lot of space and make your home feel a bit cramped so maximize your space as much as possible to avoid this.

Control the Funds

You can get some stress off your shoulders if you see that your contractors are motivated. Avoid paying in installments as it can encourage a sloppy job. Pay your contractor a 50/50 split, with the first half as down payment while the latter will be paid upon completion of the job to motivate them to finish the job. Keep in mind, however, to check state laws regarding down payments, as certain states, such as California, have laws that say you can pay more than 10% in down payment.
