Top Features of a Well-Designed Deck

A good deck design is both functional and attractive. If you successfully build a well-designed deck, this can boost your home’s curb appeal and resale value.

Continue reading to learn more about the top qualities of a good deck design.

Matches the House

Your deck should match the style and design of your house. If you have a traditional home, it’s best to choose a traditional style for your deck, too. Consider brick or stone for the support posts, and borrow elements from your interior design and incorporate them into your deck. For instance, your deck railings and posts should look similar to the ones you use indoors in porches and entries. Furthermore, the size of your deck should match the size of your home.

Controls Foot Traffic

Consider how your new deck will affect the flow of traffic in your home. If you’re going to use your deck for outdoor dining, place it next to the kitchen so you can move food and dishes more easily. If your deck can only be accessed from your living room, then you’d have to take more steps to and from your kitchen. This could also lead to dirty flooring and frequent disruption of TV viewing.

Don’t forget to also plan the transition between your indoor and outdoor spaces. Wide French or sliding glass doors are ideal because they look inviting and can make your interior look more spacious.

Follows the Lines of the House

The lines of your house are defined by vertical elements, such as the chimneys and porch columns, and horizontal features, such as eaves and porch railings. Your deck designer should study these lines and match the lines of your deck to them.
